See below: Erosive gastritis indicated the presence of small, shallow ulcers in the stomach.  This are commonly related to the use of nsaids (ibuprofen, aspirin, naproxen) or h.Yplori infection.  Atrophic gastritis is the remnant of chronic stomach inflammation which has left the stomach glands atrophied (wasted, shriveled, weakened).  This can be caused by h.Pylori or autoimmune disease.

Depends on cause: Can be due to long term infection with bacteria, h. Pylori which can cause ulcers, and cancer of stomach. Can be autoiimmune, also can increase risk for stomach cancer. Decreases acid prod. Either can cause vitamin B12 deficiency (can affect blood count and neurological function), iron def, risk of gut infection. If h pylori-rx with meds for about 2 wks. Both need B12 replacement lifelong.

Good question: Atrophic gastritis is caused by chronic inflammation of the gastric mucosa with loss of gastric glandular cells and replacement by intestinal-type epithelium and intestinal metaplasia eventually occurs. Metaplasia precedes dysplasia which is precursor to cancer in many tumors. Overall, this is an adaption of mucosa to chronic inflammation that pushes this cell to replicate and eventually mutate.

Nausea: Atrophic gastritis is not likely to give you nausea. Please get back with your physician for additional testing.

: All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Talk to the doctor who ordered the tests. Having said that, rest of the lesion should be removed and examined by a pathologist for a complete assessment.

Go back to doctor: You may need gastroscopy done. Go and see the doctor who diagnosed the h. Pylori, or if they were not a gastroenterologist , go and see one.  Good luck, .

GI doc: Gold standard would be a Upper Endoscopy for follow up with biopsy. A GI specialist would do this , but you may not require this unless u are still having pain/bloating/reflux/chronic nonproductive cough/diarrhea/Nausea-these can be all together, or individual or combo of symptoms.

which is more effective dexilant (dexlansoprazole) or omeprazole? which is safer?

is atrophic gastritis risk with these high with long term use?

They are equivalent.: Both of these work equally well. However, some patients respond well to one and not the other, and sometimes trial and error is the only method to determine which medication is best for a particular patient. The risk of atrophic gastritis, although small, would be essentially equal for each of the medications. I would recommend returning to your gastroenterologist to discuss this. Good luck.

Endoscopy: Blood test is not suitable for diagnosing atrophic gastritis. 
For good health - Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Drink enough water daily, so that your urine is mostly colorless. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually. Do not use tobacco, alcohol, weed or street drugs in any form. 
Practice safe sex, if you have sex.

i had an endoscopy r/o pud, biopsy came back atrophic gastritis. i am only 26. dr just said "gastritis" and keep taking omeprazole. is this correct?

Accepted Answer

Not so simple: If truly atrophic gastritis, it can be caused by h. Pylori bacteria, these can be hard to find on biopsy, so please ask your doctor. Also atrophic gastritis can lead to vit B12 deficiency, have you been checked for this? There may be other reasons such as acid reflux for which you require omeprazole. However, you should return and clarify these concerns with your doctor.
