Half life: Atenolol has a shorter half life than metoprolol, only about 12 hours.  Metoprolol can be taken once daily where for full effectivness atenolol should be taken twice daily.  People often forget the second dose of anything so in my mind a once a day drug is better.

Yes: The 2 medications are in the same class beta blockers, and work similarly, but they are different medications.

: Both Atenolol and Metoprolol are from a class of drugs called beta blockers. Tapering is needed when you stop any beta blocker, but it is not needed when one beta blocker is replaced with another beta blocker. You have to go off beta blockers slowly to avoid a rapid heart rate (rebound) which does not happen with replacement.

No: These are both from the same medication class, beta-blockers.  It would be extremely unusual for a physician to prescribe these simultaneously and could be potentially very dangerous. You should absolutely clarify with your physician whether this was intentional and if so, what the reason was for prescribing them both together.

Probably neither: I am not a big fan of beta blockers for hypertension, but if you have no other choice, the  better option would probably be toprol xl as atenolol is not a once a day drug.  The carrier for your drug is likely what you're allergic to, not the drug itself, explaining the reason why you're allergic to metoprolol and not lopressor (metoprolol tartrate).

why the increase?

Not sure: Since metoprolol is the generic of Atenolol, and should be equivalent, I am not sure why your doctor increase the number of pills from one a day to two a day.  I would suggest you talk to the physician who prescribed the medication to clarify the directions. I do not want you to develop side effects, so talk to you doctor. Good luck

Talk to doctor: Walgreen's may have something there, it would seem ill advised to use two drugs of the same class. (beta blockers). But your physician may have a reason for this strategy. Talk to your physician and see if this is a problem.
