Probably neither: I am not a big fan of beta blockers for hypertension, but if you have no other choice, the better option would probably be toprol xl as atenolol is not a once a day drug. The carrier for your drug is likely what you're allergic to, not the drug itself, explaining the reason why you're allergic to metoprolol and not lopressor (metoprolol tartrate).
