Both Atenolol and Metoprolol are from a class of drugs called beta blockers. Tapering is needed when you stop any beta blocker, but it is not needed when one beta blocker is replaced with another beta blocker. You have to go off beta blockers slowly to avoid a rapid heart rate (rebound) which does not happen with replacement.
