Yes and no: Although tecnically possible, i would not recommend any type of surgery with a risk of infection with cardiac surgery or intervention, especially if a forein material like an ASD device or patch is used. I would recommend to have them done seperately with a 6 months interval.

Depends: On your child's insurance status. Even medicaid covers ASD closure so cost should not be the issue.

Regretfully no: I would love to say yes, because no one should smoke. It is a vile habit with many health risks. But it doesn't directly do anything to an ASD or the device.

Accepted Answer

Several months: The amplatzer device will eventually be covered by the inside lining of the heart but this process will take a couple months to occur. Until that time, taking Aspirin will be benficial becuase it should avoid clots to form on the device.

Very common: It is quite common to have palpitations following any type of cardiac procedure.  It is important to diagnose them properly, however, so i would go see your cardiologist so they can investigate it more thoroughly.

Unrelated: The diagnoses you list are  not related to the earlier issue of an asd. Pneumonia can occur more often in asthma patients but can occur in isolation. There are some genetic factors involved in both asthma and a congenital heart defect, but they travel on separate genes and are not directly connected.

asd increased from 3mm to 16mm in 4 months. left atrium from 40 ml/ m2 to 53ml/ m2 after asd closure. does this mean my mr is rappidly increasing or am i paranoid? dr says not to worry - see it often

MR severity: Mr severity is assessed with echo and color doppler. Certainly an increase in the size of the left atrium is not beneficial but does not necessarily mean that the mr is getting worse.

i just had an asd closure with percutaneous device. been feeling fine for a week but now tonight have had regular palpitations of the misfire variety. took 5mg of propranolol over an hour ago but not helping. should i be worried about embolization?

: You should call the Cardiologist who did the procedure or go to E.R.

i have an icd, 2 asd closures, hf, enphysema, & recent diag. of ph & sleep apnea with low o2 levels at night. does apnea need to be treated 1st & ph 2?

Apnea: Yes, apnea is probably the primary disorder leading to pulmonary hypertension. Any kind of chronic lung disease can also lead to pulmonary hypertension
