what is a common cause for moderate stool and gas build up in the ascending colon that is causing severe constipation?

Some possibilities..: In an otherwise normal, healthy, young adult, causes of gas, bloating, and stool changes may be due to dietary items. Very common is lactose intolerance, which one can figure out if the symptoms go away after avoiding ALL lactose for 3-4 weeks, and symptoms return upon drinking dairy. Eating excess fiber or eating sugar alcohols (diabetic sweeteners) cause similar symptoms. There are other causes.

48y.o. constipation sufferer with collicky sore burning pain in the rlq in the area of the ascending colon, sore when pushed lying down. had a colonoscopy 6mths ago, h.pylori test w/ultrasound-all fine.  don't want a ct, would an mri help diagnosis?

Yes, it could.: The MRI will allow a good look at that  part of the colon to rule in or out anything that appears swollen, out of place, or compressed to aid in helping to figure out what is causing the pain.

: Is this a marked change in your usual bowel pattern?  You don't mention whether the ascending colon is dllated which would point to obstruction, either by impacted stool or other obstructing entities such as colon tumor in the descending colon. If you haven't already consulted a gastroenterologist, do so. If you have, I recommend consulting an abdominal surgeon.

May not be any: Signs and symptoms may not occur till cancer growth is large. Sometimes stool can test positive for blood due to occult bleeding but sensitivity is 50%--colonoscopy is recommended to evaluate further.
