dad had arthroscopy knee surgery week ago. post surgery he is having pain in calf muscles. is this unusual or associated with the post surgery?

Not always normal: Although calf pain can occur after knee arthroscopy, the concern is the potential for a deep venous thrombosis otherwise known as a blood clot. You need to contact your surgeon and have him evaluated for the potential of a blood clot. It is not necessarily a clot however you should check this. This is done with an ultrasound.

is it ok to take celebrex anti inflammatory tablets before knee surgery (arthroscopy with general anesthesia) or do i need to stop them? forgot to ask at my pre assessment?

: They would usually give you instructions not to take anything by mouth after you go to bed the night before surgery. Meds before bed would be okay in that picture, but not after you get up. Your stomach needs to be empty before any general anesthesia as a safety measure.

Incision, scope, cut: Anesthetize area, insert scope thru small incision, establish problem after washing out cloudy fluid with sterile clear sol'n, insert thin surgical tool (like scissor), correct prob. Done for torn meniscal cartilage, ant cruciate ligament, remove loose fragments or inflamed tissue. Recovery time depends on proc and ortho: 1-8 wks. Anesthesia reax, infection, clots, fluid reaccum: generally safe.

Causes painfull knee: If without repair usually very rapid max is two weeks.  If repair is done it take six weeks to be able to recover. If knee remains warm and painful there is three common cause. Low thyroid, gout , or rheumatoid arthritis. Do tsh(needs to be below 2.0), rf, and uric acid(needs to be below 6.0).

Depends: Arthroscopy is done for many different diagnosis.  Within 2 weeks you may be fine, other times it can be a couple of months.  Discusss your diagnosis with your surgeon to get a better feel on the estimated recovery for your condition.

Depends on you.: A very fit person, who is always active and takes on challenges and bumps in the road in a proactive manner may be back in action in a few days, and full recovery within a month. A sedentary, overweight, unhappy person..... Well you get the idea.

when can i hike after knee surgery? i need to go for arthroscopic knee surgery for meniscus repair. i'm planning a vacation in three months to do some moderate hiking. am i being too optimistic about the recovery period?

Accepted Answer

That : That is probably a bit on the optimistic side. This would be something to discuss with the surgeon of course. A meniscal repair as opposed to a debridement would require a much longer period of rest because you want to give the repair a chance to work before you go back to putting your knee to work. If the meniscus is debrided back to a stable border (and not repaired) then there is nothing that would keep you from getting back on the trails even before 3 months.

Is it osteoarthritis: If you have osteoarthritis of the knee, arthroscopic surgery doesn't help. Get a second opinion.
