Not Recommended: The main reason physicians will tell you not to use it, it that since 2002, the american association of clinical endocrinologists does not recommend the use of desiccated thyroid for thyroid replacement therapy for hypothyroidism (baskin, 2002). In general, 
desiccated thyroid hormone, does not provide a uniform amounts of levothyroxine.

Armour Thyroid: Some people say that Armour Thyroid is better, but really it is just different.   Armour is a physiological mix of T3 (liothyronine) and T4 in the form of an extract of pig thyroid gland.   

Levothyroxin is a synthetic T4.

It is true that some patients do feel better on Armour.  Some patients feel better on Levothyroxine.    The synthetic T4s can cause more of an increase in reverse T3 (liothyronine).

No, it's not: Hi. Some people want desiccated porcine thyroid extract (Armour thyroid) for various reasons. We can manage fine with Armour, but levothyroxine is more pure; as a slaughter house thyroid extract, Armour has more lot-to-lot variability. If it was me I were treating, I'd take levothyroxine, but I respect patients' wishes and will use Armour if they really want it.

Yes: Armour thyroid is a natural preparation from pigs thyroid gland. It has both T4 and t3 (liothyronine).

No: pretibial myxedema is a skin disorder associated with autoimmune thyroid disease (typically Graves disease).  It occurs unrelated to thyroid hormone levels or medications such as Armour thyroid.

Accepted Answer

Armour take alone: For best results, Armour, NatureThroid, levothyroxine, Synthroid and other thyroid medications should be taken on an empty stomach in the morning. Imitrex (sumatriptan) and thyroid medications may be used by the same person, provided the thyroid dose has been adjusted to symptoms and lab tests.
