Should you do ?: Answer is yes, if your surgeon is requesting digital images of your surgery site. The amount of radiation is least for a single dental film, and obviously more for a scan that has to pass through more tissue. What you must remember is that the dosage is of diagnostic strength, not occupational exposure. Millions of images have been taken without a problem.

It'll take a while: Sounds like it was a severe infection.  It will take 4-6 weeks for swelling to go down. Pain should go down by the end of antibiotics. If it doesn't then a scan to see if infection is still trapped in sinus cavity is a good step.

No: My patients tell me that having an implant placed is easier than removal of a tooth. I had a patient put off an implant for 5 years fearing the procedure. She finally had it done and came in the following day to tell me that it was much easier than expected and that she felt foolish for putting it off for so long. Your dentist would prescribe pain medication for you if you required any.

Swollen cheek: Some swelling after an extraction in not unusual.
Follow the post-op instructions given to you by the surgeon. Ice for 24-48 hours, then moist heat.
If the swelling does not resolve within a week, contact the surgeon.

Crown vs implant: A dental implant is a titanium root replacement and this is used to replace a missing tooth.  A crown is made on an existing tooth when there is weakened tooth structure form decay, fracture, or wear and a strong  root remaining.  It will provide the strength needed for normal function like eating and speaking.  If your existing tooth is healthy enough you may be able to have a crown. see dentist.

Tooth : Tooth #6 is the upper right canine.  This an important tooth in the mouth as it acts a an anchor between the front teeth and back teeth.  The ideal course of treatment would be to replace it with a dental implant.  Your oral and maxillofacial surgeon can perform an evaluation and determine if an implant is an appropriate choice for your situation.  They will also discuss you alternatives and the steps involved in the process.

Once a tooth is extracted a slow but persistent loss of bone occurs. Also the extraction process may have caused bone loss, especially the thin bone on the lip side of the tooth.  Prior to placement of the implant the amount of bone will need to assessed.  If insufficient bone is not available then you will need a bone graft using either your own bone, donated bone or synthetic bone.  Once enough bone is present a dental implant can be placed.  After the implant heals the process to place a crown can be started.

You treatment options include:
1. No treatment - this will lead to further bone loss and shifting of adjacent teeth.
2. Removable denture - this appliance usually has a metal frame work and denture tooth and snaps into place.  The denture needs to be taken out at night.
3. Bridge - this involves cutting down the adjacent teeth to accommodate crowns that will support an artificial tooth. It is cemented into place.  Bone loss will continue with time so you may notice the gum shrinking away from the false tooth.

The short term cost of a dental implant will be about 1.5 to 2 times the cost of a bridge but over the long term it should be less costly as bridges and crowns have a finite life span.  If you take care of the health of the gum tissue around the implant it should theoretically last a life time, though the crown may need replacing.  Another advantage of the implant is that it remains independent of other teeth so if you have a problem with them you can deal with them independently of the implant thus being a more cost efficient solution.

More and more dental plans are providing partial coverage for implants.

Discuss with dentist: Every case, every patient, every dentist results in different time frames.  There are so many factors at play here.  Only a dentist who is familiar with your case can give you the answer you request.  Generally, implants are placed on visit #1; time required for integration = 3 to 6 months; implants uncovered and restored =2 to 3 weeks.  If bone grafting or other issues, more time may be required.

i will be getting an implant on the tooth right next to my big tooth i'm looking to get braces in the future when i move. is that possible ?

No: An implant cannot be moved by orthodontic means. Have the ortho first and then get the implant
