By : By far, the most common reason for sleep apnea (disordered breathing during sleep) is obesity.  With weight gain, the tissues surrounding your chest, throat and nasal passages become heavy and floppy.  This makes it harder for these areas to inflate with breathing leading to loud snoring and difficulty with proper oxygenation.

There are a few things you should do.

-first, make an appointment to see your doctor.  Talk to them about your problems and have them examine you for signs of rarer diseases that could be causing your symptoms such as heart failure.

-create a diet and exercise plan.  Weight loss is the best long-term way to treat sleep apnea due to weight gain.

-consider a sleep study.  If your symptoms are severe and are affecting your daily life, consider a sleep study to evaluate your disordered breathing.

-other treatments besides weight loss include CPAP (continued positive airway pressure), surgery, or muscle strengthening exercises.  Talk to your doctor about your best options.  Good luck!

i have a bmi of 29.2 which is overweight and on top of that i have asthma, i use the brand ventolin. ive been having issues of being shortness of breath when i do things.  how can i lose this weight?

SOB: If it is in any position , but happens when you lay down, the symptoms could  be caused by GERD.  That would be one idea. I would recommend getting checked.

Start with CPAP: In an adult with severe sleep apnea, CPAP or continuous positive airway pressure, is the best option.  Once you are able to establish good compliance (goal would be at least 7 hours of sleep with machine every night) you may find it easier to exercise, eat healthy and loose weight. Your surgical risk will also go down when/if you get your tonsils and adenoids removed - if you are using CPAP prior.

Fleeting: Such a fleeting symptom doesn't seem significant if you have no chest discomfort or shortness of breath with exertion and if there is no cough. See your physician if symptoms persist or worsen,however for reassurance.

: Everyone occasionally takes a somewhat deeper breath in order to open areas of the lung that close when a deep breath is not taken. This allows more oxygen to be inhaled and more carbon dioxide to be exhaled. If your breathing becomes uncomfortable or you feel like you cannot get enough air, you should see a doctor ASAP.
