Blood or swab: You can have a blood test or the swab test, they are both accurate.  Typically most physicians will tell you if you're unsure of your exposure to get tested as far as 6 months post exposure to confirm you haven't been exposed to the virus.

: Look into your local clinic and its privacy protocol. In the US, STD testing and treatment can be obtained in most states without parental notification or consent. This may/not be true in the UK. Notification &amp; type of encounter notices are also sent to parents here if you are seen on their insurance. I don't know if UK healthcare does it. if you think you need it get it done, regardless.

HIV: Testing for antibodies should be repeated at 3 and 6 months after exposure. The basic tests are very sensitive, but some patients are slow to develop antibodies. If you want a far more specific and definitive way of reassuring yourself ask for a PCR for HIV RNA. It is a little pricey.

HIV DNA by PCR: When hospital workers are stuck with needles contaminated by HIV positive patients, they get a blood test called HIV dna by pcr which can tell if you have been infected within the last week.  Antibody tests take up to 6 months to turn positive after HIV exposure.  The HIV dna by pcr test is available at stdtestexpress.Com.

Normal variability: Unfortunately, all the tests we have available today have their limitation and there is usually an acceptable range of variability. It is not likely to get the exact number on two different tests even using the same equipment etc...So, if the results fall in a "range of negative" twice (despite differences), the chance of truly negative is good here. If u r still concerned, consult doc. Good luck.

Yes: In that situation, a person is negative, meaning she did not catch the HIV virus from having sex 14 months ago.
