is there a safe cholesterol lowering drug that isnt a risk for diabetes,  i'm a 55 y/o woman and scared i can get the disease from the meds! advice?

Not all medications.: While it's true that 1 type of cholesterol medication- statins- can marginally increase your blood sugar levels (ie, pose a small risk for diabetes), it is by no means a certainty for everyone. Also, other cholesterol medications, like Ezetimibe, REDUCE blood sugar &amp; are used ONLY in diabetics. So talk to your doctor about alternatives. If you're under doc's care, he/she can take preventive steps.

Need more info: How high is your cholesterol? What other risk factors, if any, do you have? How likely are you be compliant with a rigorous dietary regimen? It would be prudent to consult your doctor and may be a nutritionist to see if diet and exercise would work for you.
For good health - Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Drink enough water daily, so that your urine is mostly colorless. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually. Do not use tobacco, alcohol, weed or street drugs in any form. 
Practice safe sex.

overall cholesterol is good. triglycerides are close to 300 (296) what does this mean for diabetes control? what causes this to rise, it was fine

Elevated tri's: A couple of things cause triglycerides to rise like having eaten a fatty meal prior to testing, suboptimally controlled diabetes, hypothyroidism, excessive alcohol intake and too much protein in your urine(so called nephrotic syndrome).  For you it sounds like suboptimally controlled diabetes may be the culprit.  Hope this helps.

Statins : Studies show an association but not causality between statins and type 2 diabetes. The conditions tend to occur together. The cardiovascular risk assessment really drives and determines whether one should be taking a statin based on the new ACC guidelines.  Statins prevent cardiovascular death the leading cause of death in the US. Cholestoff no. Control your diet to avoid diabetes no direct link.

Lower risk: Do not take any medicine unless your doctor has explained why you are taking this and other medicines.

Heart issue?: Given your age and high cholesterol, and EKG would not be enough to reassure us that your heart is OK. The stress test will be a much better option. For a woman, nuclear stress tests are considered more accurate.

Suggestions: Many causes of cerebrovascular disease, but would suggest checking your homocysteine and triglyceride levels, as these are BOTH risk factors.

Zyprexa (olanzapine): Moderate risk especially if high dose or predisposed to these illnesses such as family history.

Dietitian: That's much too complex to answer on the internet. See a good registered dietitian. Generally, a well-balanced diet, restricting calories and saturated fat. Avoid snack food, junk food. Eat 3 meals/d, no snacks, avoid extra salty items. Fresh food is best. Lots of fiber. See the dietitian.
