They differ in that the so called atypicals are non-neuroleptics and interact with both serotonin and Dopamine receptos, while the typicals primarily affect dopamin receptors.

Studies have shown that weight gain can be avoided for patient's on atypical antipsychotics who are educated before  hand, monitored and who maintain healthy nutrition and exercise. Some antipsychotics are more strongly associated with weight gain then others. Whenever I start a patient on an antipsychotic - I also send them for a nutrition consult. Consider working w nutritionist.

Which one: All antipsychotics are used to treat hallucinations and delusions and some may help in mood stabilization (abilify (aripiprazole) and seroquel). Not a good idea: Cigarette smoking can decrease the levels of the antipsychotic in your system and if you were started on the meds without smoking and then you smoke, chances are they will not work and you will have a relapse of the symptoms. if already smoking when put on meds, you will need higher doses for same effect. so no - not a good idea
