For some we dont have antibiotics yet!

Common problem: Not long after the first penicillin became available we started to see staphylococcus that was resistant. Synthetic penicillins (methacillin& others) were developed & we had more resistant germs. Sometimes we can focus treatment by sending a germ to the lab(uti) & testing it against several abx to make sure we only use the one that works. That slows the emergence of new resistant germs.

Depending on the type and location of your infection, cultures may be needed to pinpoint the specific organism.  The lab can then run a sensitivity test to see which anitbiotics are effective.

Mutations: Just like humans, germs have dna that occasionally mutates. For some mutations it will lead to development of new cell wall structure or other features that alter the germ enough that a specific antibiotic no longer works to kill it. The more often an antibiotic is used in the general population, the more pressure exists to create a resistant strain.
