Maybe quite: The overall success rate for any single antidepressant is roughly 70% (though a single number is very approximate). A  different antidepressant has roughly the same overall rate but the pool of people it works for will be somewhat different. Together (sequentually) they cover 85%, a third 90%. The numbers may be different depending on criteria, but the principle holds.

It depends: This depends on the particular antidepressant, as there are many choices.  Also it depends on the person taking the medicine, because each may experience these effects differently.  All antidepressants have basic effectiveness, but side effect profiles may differ quite a bit.  I wish i could be more specific than this, but without more information, i can't.

Unsure: Not sure i understand what you mean by linked.  I would presume that you may mean does a sufferer of tmj/tmd sometimes undergo depression because of their pain and ends up on antidepressants.  Many of my new patients are taking these meds. They come into my office after trying many other remedies.

Depends: The use of antidepressants in glaucoma patients depends on how open their "angle" is .  Many open angle glaucoma patients can use any antidepressant because they do not have a narrow "angle"  your ophthalmologist should be able, based on your exam, to tell you if this is a concern for you.

Yes, it can: Sam-e is frequently combined with antidepressants. Unlike most medications, Sam-e should be taken on an empty stomach, otherwise it doesn't get absorbed. The starting dose is about 400 mg, but it can be increased to 1,200 mg and higher.

Not necessarily: In his book "listening to prozac, (fluoxetine) " psychiatrist peter kramer implied that for some people, ssri antidepressants cured anxiety and depression to the point that they felt "better than well" -- in fact, were flourishing.  This isn't the case with everyone, though.  Some people feel dulled with these medications -- not "depressed, " but also not like themselves (in their experience).

Yes: Yes, you can eat fermented foods while on ssri antidepressants.  It is MAO inhibitors which may be a problem with such foods, not ssri's so much.

Accepted Answer

Not by themselves: As a rule, antidepressants do not make you feel better about yourself.  They can calm the more painful symptoms of depression and anxiety, though, so that psychotherapy can proceed & you can work through limiting life issues.  This can improve how you feel about yourself.  Some early patients treated with Prozac (fluoxetine) did say they felt "better than well, " though.  Read "listening to prozac" by kramer.
