im taking cephalexin for internal eye stye. i seem to now have acquired a sinus infection. will i need yet another antibiotic? or will the cephalexin help both conditions.

Sinus symptoms: Most sinus congestion problems and drainage are due to viral infections or allergy, neither of which is helped by any antibiotic. But if you do have a bacterial sinus infection, cephalexin usually would work, but not necessarily. Check back with your doctor if the sinus symptoms continue for a few days while taking cephalexin. And maybe add a nasal saline spray.

my 3 year old son keeps getting recurring eye infections that look like a sty, it forms a big puss filled head.this is now the 4th one within 2 months, they clear up and then another one starts. do we need an antibiotic ointment to treat it?

Accepted Answer

: This can be difficult. Simple sty's will often resolve with warm compresses. When they are recurrent like this, the kid is often harboring an invasive staph germ in their nasal passages or skin that may require treatment. Bathing in water with a cup of bleach added (1cup/20 gallons) can reduce staph on the skin.  I would confer with the kids doc about treatment options.

can u use a tiny bit of listerine on a q-tip to resolve a stye/ infection on your lid?

Stye / infection: A stye is a blocked or infected oil gland in the eyelid. They usually respond to using warm compresses a few times a day (a warm, clean wash rag applied over the closed eye for 5-10 minutes). Heat may temporarily increase swelling. If the lid is extremely tender or diffusely swollen it is probably infected and antibiotics (including oral antibiotics) might be needed.

so i been getting these big boils all over my body like the soze of a pingball first it started i had a bad stye infection then these big boils?

Staff infections: Need to see doctor for treatment.  Recommend culture of these boils to see what bacteria grows out and to help choose appropriate antibiotic treatment.  Also recommend immune system testing as well. Best of luck with this.  Dr R

Not necessarily...: Make sure you use warm compresses on the stye about 15 mins 2-3 times a day. Keep the area always clean.If it doesn't get better  in a few days or else gets worse you might need antibiotics in that area so you would need to see you doctor.

: If your doctor diagnosed a sty then i would not be concerned about anything else causing pressure on your eyelid.

Warm compresses: Start with warm compresses several times a day.  If they don't work, see your doctor.

Accepted Answer

Stye: Stye in eye is usually a self limiting condition. Usually resolves on its own. Warm compresses may help. There is currently no evidence that neosporin would help, Also you can get the medication inside the eye and cause irritation. If stye does not improve on its own in a week, please kindly see an eye specialist (opthalmologist).

Normal: As the acute phase of a stye resolves, there may be some residual scar tissue that will remodel over time; however, the infection that causes a stye may wax and wane, so, if it persists, you may want to have an ophthalmologist take  a look.

can i substitute cipro (ciprofloxacin) for keflex to treat an eye infection related to a stye?

Accepted Answer

Speak to your doctor: Keflex is an older antibiotic but is extremely effective (and liekly moreso than cipro) against the bacteria that tend to be involved in eyelid infections.  It is advisable to stick with the medication that your doctor prescribes, rather than trying to save money by using a medication that you have left over from a previous infection.
