need expert advice. what if i use anti-biotic cream and peroxiode, is that safe for my ear piercing?

Ear Piercing: Don't recommend use of  alcohol or hydrogen peroxide to clean piercings as they may cause the surrounding skin to dry out excessively. New piercings are usually cleaned twice a day. Do not twist  jewelry / post. Saturate gauze w saline solution (pinch of sea salt in warm water), place on piercing ; allow it to gently drip into the piercing. Or you can buy pressurized saline solution at drug store.

if you have a small cut and it gets infected, can it be treated with antibiotic cream? will it usually streak if it spreads.

Sometimes: There are different degrees of infection. If the wound shows a little redness at the periphery you should be able to treat it with a topical antibiotic. However, with more redness, swelling, pain or warmth you should see a doctor. Streaking of the redness away from the wound would be a sign of a more significant infection that would also need medical attention.

Possible: yes: But, as a physician can not advise you to use it as fda has determined that it may longer be effective after the expiry date.

Now: Remove any foreign body when you have a skin or cartilage infection.  The infection will clear much faster.

No: You  are dealing with an area of inflamation, not infection.

Accepted Answer

Surgical incisions: It is not necessary to apply antibiotic creams to a surgical incision that is healing well and without signs of infection.  Dressing changes as advised by your surgeon and cleansing with mild soap and water is usually all that is needed.  If the incision looks infected, you need to see your doctor; sometimes this requires a small procedure to clean the wound, +/- antibiiotics.

does topical antibiotic cream help treat a mild pilodinal cyst?

Accepted Answer

No: If this is really a pilonidal cyst, it needs to be incised and drained and washed out.  There are foreign objects inside the cyst (usually ingrown hairs) which are a nidus for infection.  Creams will not treat this.  You need to see a doctor who can properly diagnose the pilonidal cyst.  Often they have complex pathways (tracks) which may require the services of a general surgeon.

See an allergist: People refer to a lot of things as allergy, even though they may not be. Discussion with an allergist will help determine whether the reaction was truly allergic, and if it was, your allergist can perform skin patch testing to see to which of the components of the cream your husband may be reacting.

Pregnancy: Use of antibiotic cream will not make oral contraceptives ineffective. Any time you have unprotected sexual activity, there is a chance for pregnancy.

If it was prescribed: I would think you could assume it was safe.
