Alcohol Abuse: It could be a genetic predispostion towards alcohol abuse usually from father to son, or could be depression, anxiety, bipolar, schizophrenia, adhd etc.

Not likely: Alcohol dependence is a disease, a metabolic disorder very much like diabetes.  Many don't believe this, as people don't look ill until almost dead. Also, what changes most is behavior, & we are taught that we should be able to change our behavior by willpower.  Watch the video "pleasure unwoven" on youtube. Some, however, abuse alcohol but aren't dependent. If unsure, see an addiction specialist.

Risks include:: Male gender, family history of alcohol use disorder especially in a parent, personal history of mental illness especially if untreated; personal history of stressors such as loss of employment, etc.

Never 2 late 4 help: When you loves someone it is always very painful if not devastating to see them ruining their life with drugs and alcohol. When you are a child and you your parents are under the influence of drugs and alcohol, you are being deprived of the support and  good role models which are essential for healthy growth and development. It is never too late to get help.

Nothing good: No teenager should be experimenting or using alcohol or drugs.  The detrimental effects on young adults can only lead to long term problems.

Not necessarily: Many studies indicate that there is a genetic component to alcoholism.  Being brought up in an alcoholic home can only enhance this risk.  Children tend to develop problem solving skills that they have observed in a parent.  Taking a drink is not a good example.  If you care enough to be concerned, you have already taken a positive step toward sobriety and a better life.

Vulnerability: How a child, parents and society deal with bullying affects the psychological outcome on the child.  Children who are made to feel helpless and vulnerable by the bullying are more likely to develop anxiety and depression and ultimately alcohol abuse.  With family and school support the victim can be helped to feel empowered reducing the risk of future psychological disorders.

Does alcohol rule U?: Alcoholism means that drinking alcohol is interfering with your life in some way.  If this is the case or others think you need help, go talk to an addictions counselor or go to a 12 step meeting.  Also see a medical doctor to see if drinking is hurting your health.  If you drink instead of working, spending time with your family, or going to school, alcohol is probably a problem for you.
