No: Low fat diet can sometimes prevent the onset of symptoms of gallbladder disease, however once you've had symptoms you are very likely to have future attacks.  Those future attacks could occur at anytime after any meal and at a more inconvinent time of your life.  Surgery also prevents infection and pancreatitis.

i have a 10 cm hiatal hernia. i had my endoscopy last week. the hernia is still large but is non complicated. my gi feels im not a good candidate for surgery. i have no significant symptoms. on antacids. should i worry?

Accepted Answer

: There are some concerns but I wouldn't obscess about it. Be aware that a major complication can be the hernia getting stuck in the chest causing significant distress. Avoid straining the abdominal muscles which places pressure on the hiatus hernia. Also don't lie flat after a large meal which can cause regurgitation of stomach contents and potential aspiration.

is a toupet fundoplication a good option for refractive gerd not controlled with ppis and antacids despite diet changes?  are the side effects (gas, bloating, risk for dumping syndrome really high) from the surgery and possibly worse than the gerd?

GERD: The procedure is performed on patients who are not having a good quality of life inspite if maximum medical treatment and lifestyle modification. Long term benefit is not guaranteed although short and medium term benefit is generally reported by patients. Seems like you are aware of risks as well. Good luck

DGL is used to: help with acid reflux and is safe.  If you take licorice that is not DGL, over time it can raise your blood pressure.  Please consult w/your doc.  Peace and good health.

i don't have an appetite. i hardly eat one meal for the day, what do i do . i had surgery on my asophagus 20 years ago and take a lot of tums (calcium carbonate) now because of asid reflux . i just don't feel like eating what do i do.

Depends on…: Frequency & severity of symptoms: mild, occasional heartburn can be relieved by otc antacids (tums/rolaids/mylanta/gaviscon). More frequent/severe may require otc h2 acid blocker (zantac/axid/tagamet/pepcid). Severe/frequent symptoms: try otc/rx ppi (prilosec/prevacid/protonix). Dietary changes help, too: no caffeine/soda, fried/fatty foods, spicy foods, onions, acidic foods (tomatoes, lemon, lime.
