Accepted Answer

Treatment options: If your injury occured 72+ hours ago then it is acceptable to switch to heat in an effort to deal with any swelling in the area. Icyhot doesn't cause the same healing effect of ice or heat. Topicals such as this are known as counterirritants that trick pain receptors, but really do nothing more than numb the area.

If you are having severe pain, or are unable to walk on your leg please have a xray.

i got hit on my shin, so why is my ankle swelling?

Reactive edema: Is very common. It could also be bleeding.  It could be an underlying fracture or stress fracture.  If you think you have a broken bone see an er doc or ortho guy.

If you think yu have a DVT - which is different - you need to tell your family doctor this.

i was playing softball 2 weeks ago and got hit in the shin with a ball. the swelling is getting bigger. is this normal? and how long should it last?

Trauma: You probably have significant swelling from tissue injury , including blood in the soft tissues causing inflammation. After two weeks you should have an x-ray to rule out bone involve not. Heat will help this resolve.

i tripped on stairs and my leg went in between the stairs hit the bottom my shin pretty good. sever swelling and pain no bruising. what could it be?

A Bruise: Wait a few days, the bruise might be on a deep layer next to the bone, and it takes a while for the blood to make it to the surface to see.  The blood might show up not where it was stuck but lower due to gravity effects  and it might not bruise at all, swelling alone can occur after blunt trauma.

hit shin on rim of tub, not bruised, swollen, warm to touch, discomfort but no pain, swelling does not feel like fluid inside, no discoloration. help?

Not much we can do: About that online. It's certainly not a typical sounding injury, but I don't know how long ago this happened and what other things might be contributing. Sounds like the leg needs to be looked at. Urgent care is your best bet since they have x-rays on site. Good luck and feel better!

got hit on front/partial side of my shin by a softball going roughly 56 mph a month ago. major swelling, dark bruising, extremely painful for the following 2 weeks. still has a dark bruise ring, hard, swollen, hurts to touch. should i be concerned?

: You need to have your leg examined to see what the problem is. A month is quite a while to still have swelling and pain so you need to have it evaluated. There is no other way to have it diagnosed but to see a doctor. This is likely a hematoma but this can also get infected and require antibiotics. Treatment can be rendered once a diagnosis is made. : Are you asking me to tell you if there’s a fracture?  Likely, but I would need to see the X-ray or at least get a thorough in person exam done first. Please go to urgent care and have your leg evaluated asap.

i hit my shin really hard today on a bench, now it is swollen and bruised and when you run your finger over it you can feel an indention, what should i do? i've been icing it to take down the swelling so far

Accepted Answer

Keep doing: what you are doing.  It is not uncommon for a forceful contusion to make such a "dent" as you describe.  Icing and elevation are the best things to do, for up to 48 or 72 hours. Then resume normal activities avoiding anything that seems to increase the swelling or pain (i.e. running, over-exertion). The dent may remain a surprisingly long time...even months to years:(  Sorry. Take care of yourself

i was pitching in a softball league & was directly hit really hard on my lower leg. maybe an inch from my shin bone, half way down my leg on the left. it immediately swelled and bruised. swelling has spread most of my leg & ankle, should i be worried?

Common: bruising from shin initially spreads down to foot and ankle due to gravity. Should resolve in time. Try some elevation and ankle exercises. See doctor if gets worse rather than better.
