how can you tell that you have a torn ligament in your ankle?

Get evaluated: A torn ligament in your ankle will present itself with pain and swelling, similar to an ankle sprain or fracture. When you get evaluated, the physician may manipulate your ankle to test for torn ligaments.  Examples of these tests are the anterior draw or stress inversion. While torn ligaments have similar characteristics as stretched out ligaments, imaging studies like MRI may be used to diagnose.

Good success: If your treatment plan has already included conservative treatment and this has failed, surgery may be indicated. Repair can be achieved in many ways depending on the location of the torn ligament and has good success.

Stabilize the ankle: Ligaments have no blood supple and as a result don't heal. You need to have your ankle scoped with possible repair of the ligament with excision of the thickened tissues covering the ankle (synovium)

Brace: Ligaments can take just as long as bone. So 6-8 weeks is the time frame i use. I would highly recommend making sure you brace the ankle during the recovery period.

Can be the same...: HI! An ankle sprain can be a varying degree of tendon or ligament damage. Usually, if a ligament is badly injured / damaged there will / can be excessive ' loosenes' of the affected joint or exceesive motion between the two bones the ligament joins. This should be easily determined in most cases by a competent exam including various stress and range of motion testing ie: ankle anterior draw test.

Yes: If u sprained your ankle ligament(s)it depends on the severity of the sprain. Generally an acute more severe ankle sprain can be tx. In a cam walker for 7-10 days followed by a period of mobilization/bracing and therapy. Severe( grade3.)ankle sprains may take 4-6 wks. To heal. See your ors.

The ankle give out: You will have the ankle give out on you when the ligament is torn , were you feel pain when you have tendonitis when walk if you have tendonitis.

Check with MD: Better check with your doctor to make sure you did not reinjure that ligament. And let it heal as long as it takes

Ankle: See orthopedic surgeon & get MRI to check for talus ostechondral defect/fracture, bone contusions, or syndesmotic tear.

PT or MRI: The ankle sprain that does not improve often either needs physical therapy or an MRI. PT helps reduce pain, improve motion, strength and function. MRI can uncover all the sources of pain, and at times, changes the treatment options.
