i had a knee arthroscopy 2 days ago. having lots of tingling in groin, op leg & other leg some. minimal swelling & no pain. did have a scopolamine patch which i removed today. had a steroid shot in or. not taking pain meds.should i go to er?

: These symptoms are not usual to your surgery.  Please call the number on your discharge papers and your surgeon or the anesthesiology team can answer your concerns.   This requires you call immediately.

how long should i expect swelling to last post knee arthroscopy?

Accepted Answer

Swelling : Swelling after a knee scope can last several days to several weeks. It depends on what was done, the amount if any of swelling prior to surgery and how long the surgery takes. Arthroscopy is done with fluid distention and the fluid is not all removed at the end of surgery.  Most of my patients have some swelling for a week or less.  If swelling perists then the knee may need to be drained.

i had knee arthroscopy done a week ago and the swelling in the knee from the same area prior to surgery is still there. is that normal?

Accepted Answer

Can be normal: Can be normal to have swelling in the knee for up to 3-4 weeks post-op from standard arthroscopy.  Limit walking, continue ice and elevation, and continue gentle early range  of motion.  The swelling should slowly resolve.  Use the swelling as an indication for increasing weight bearing activities.

after 10 weeks post knee arthroscopy should there still be bruising and a little swelling and pain associated with knee . pain is about a 2?

: Persistent bruising more than 2 months after the arthroscopic surgery is not common but mild local swelling and pain are not rare. You should make an appointment with the orthopedist just to play safe. Take care!

Associated problems: Knee arthroscopy is great to address mechanical pathology such as a loose body or meniscus tear; however, associated problems like hyaline cartilage injuries, systemic arthritis, synovitis, or ligament i laxity might not have been fixed or addresses with either arthroscopy.

can arthritis develop soon after knee arthroscopy if swelling was not controlled and there is bleeding in joint? symptoms point to possible arthritis

At 24 y.o,: What was the reason for getting the arthroscopy in the first place?  You may have had it before; however prolonged inflammation and blood in the joint could release cytokines which could attack the cartilage causing arthritis.  It however has to be prolonged. Weeks, months of inflammation in addition to further trauma to the knee such as weight bearing, continued sports etc.

hi! i am 6 days post left knee arthroscopy for torn meniscus/arth etc. i have pain &swelling in my thigh..very hard as well as tender to touch.dvt-neg?

Thigh swelling: Could be just post operative swelling, an infection, or a less likely still a DVT.  If you have seen a doctor and had the DVT study would be reasonable to wait a few days and see what happens.  I would return to the doctor if symptoms persist.

two months ago i had a knee arthroscopy and aspirated as i was being extubated. developed aspiration pneumonia.  within a week i started having symmetrical pain in my knees and elbows.  it has not abated and in fact is worsening.no swelling or erythema.

Aspiration pneumonia: It could well be related if you were septic due to the pneumonia, but at this time it purely theoretical.

are there ways to just have your lower leg numbed during knee arthroscopy?

Accepted Answer

Yes: Some types of knee arthroscopy can be performed under local anesthesia with adequate sedation. But a discussion with the surgeon and anesthesiologist is required and at times during the surgery it must be converted to a general anesthic if the procedure is not being tolerated or the relaxation of the knee is not enough.
