Running: No. Not unless they are hitting up against something.  If you have pain while running, this should be evaluated by a doctor.

Venous insufficiency: This causes swelling due to blood/fluid pooling in lower legs from venous valves not working properly in pumping blood up legs. Swelling is normally better or even absent when get out of bed in am but after allowing legs to hang down or weightbear, swelling returns. Swelling can cause small vessels under skin to burst and pigment of blood causes skin discoloration. See physician for evaluation.

Sprain: It sounds like an ankle sprain. RICE, or rest, ice, compression and elevation are the mainstay of treatment. Make sure you follow up with your doc for proper diagnosis and followup.

Depends: The bone may be broken, but you will need to have an x-ray taken to be certain.

Because you : Injured it....there are nerve endings that were injured, a swelling response likely occured....it's no different then if your punched in the arm...this hurts also...

Possibly: You absolutely need to have your ankle evaluated for a fracture. A fracture can only be determined from a xray and evaluation by your doctor. See a foot/ankle specialist immediately before you do more harm to your ankle.

Time to see doc: While circumstances are missing, your symptoms are highly suggestive of an ankle sprain at least. You will need an exam, +/- an X-ray based on exam findings. The sooner, the better.

Let see if i can hel: When of the things could be  the problem that he have ligament injury which did not healed. Other things could be have a small fracture of the cartilage in the talus did not healed. Check it out, both could be diagnose with MRI of the area.
