Anemia: While iron deficiency is a common cause of anemia esp in menstruating women, there are many causes of anemia with normal iron levels. Ie nutritional b vitamin defiency,  bone marrow issues causing decreased production of red blood cells, hemolysis or increased breakdown of red blood cells, drugs etc.  Your doctor should help sort things out for you.

my iron levels came back 21 low, transferrin 352.0  normal, tibc 492.8  high , saturation 4.3 % low . would this be  normal anemia?

Iron deficiency Anem: Looks like you have iron deficiency anemia but the confirmatory test is 'ferritin' level in the blood being low. Talk to your doctor to know why you have this. You either may be bleeding from your gut or due to your menses (excess).

if my iron level is 22 but my hbg is normal and im not anemic, does this still result in iron deffenciancy anemia?

Accepted Answer

No.: Iron deficiency is separate from iron deficiency anemia.  If iron levels remain low enough for long enough one will develop anemia.  If HGB is normal you do not have anemia and therefore do not have iron deficiency anemia.

hi. i've read that low iron/anemia can make my eggs non-viable.  is this reversible when iron levels are increased?

Unlikely: Anemia can make you weak and unwell but has no serious effects on your body functions like the issue that you have raised. That is not something I would be concerned or worried about. get a medical check up to find the cause of anemia and get it treated. You will be well soon!

Not necessarily: Anemia refers to a low hemoglobin or hematocrit. If yours is low than you probably have iron deficient anemia and may benefit from iron supplements.

Energy: Good quality, 7 to 9 hour regular sleep, outdoor activity daily in the sun, aerobic 45 minute moderate exercise like swift walking and small balanced meals all increase energy. Eat food that improve iron absorption such as vitamin C in citrus fruits, dark green leafy vegetables, melons, potatoes, tomatoes and strawberries. Eat high iron foods like Red meat, Pork, Poultry, Seafood, and Beans.

Multiple possible.: If a patient has had recent surgery, that might be the cause.  B12 and Folic Acid deficiencies can cause a high MCV (ie, it can represent a nutritional cause).  Other possibilites include hemolysis (breaking of red blood cells), kidney disease and other chronic diseases.

iron at 45, unsaturated ibc 277, total ibc 307, ferritin 69, saturation 14. is this anemia or normal? can these levels cause pvcs? ive been diagnosed with benign pvcs but im hopeful that something can stop them. ive done everything?

: PVCs are so common they can be considered normal if EKG and Holter OK. Iron studies tell us nothing about anemia.  Need Hb or Hct.

Benign PVCs most likely Dx as others have suggested to you. Listen to your Drs. Then almost never lie.

Probably not anemia: "Normal blood levels" (e.g. hematocrit, hemoglobin, or iron testing) prove iron deficiency isn't the problem. The symptoms of "severe iron deficiency anemia" are exactly the same for many other health problems. See your doctor to learn the cause.

can you be iron deficient with normal mch & mcv levels? hgb 10.1 hct 32.6 mchc 31 my dr wants to treat me with iron iv for anemia. but mcv/mch is normal. iron% 11 ferritin 79 tibc 319. am i iron deficient or could this be another type of anemia?

: The blood test results you described are not those of typical iron deficient anemia. More lab works are needed to make a definite diagnosis.
