Iron deficiency: Has a hematologist investigated the cause of the iron deficiency?  Blood loss would be high on the list of causes. If his total iron binding capacity remains elevated, he would still be deficient in iron stores and he may remain anemic. Knowing levels of hematocrit,hemoglobin,red cell indices,b12 and folic acid levels, wbc,platelet count and serum electrophoresis(myeloma) is helpful if no bleeding

See below: 1. You need to have your GI ract evaluated for blood loss which can cause iron deficency. Then you need iron replacement.

2. Your leg swelling is probably due to a low albumin. You need to find out why your Albumin is low-it could be a kidney or liver problem or severe malnutrition. You need to discuss this with a doctor. This situation cannot be diagnosed on line.

Needs bone marrow: high B12 level can be a sign of bone marrow disease such as MDS which causes anemia and can be treated well

Yes: You also have a duty to learn the cause of your anemia, and insist your physician explain the workup. "Low blood pressure" is a non-entity if you feel well. Hypertension is the silent killer. Stay pro-active about your health.

They can be compared to sparks jumping out of a fire in the process known as oxidation, or fuel burning to provide cellular energy. The essential treatment is blood letting until the ferritin gets into the normal range, it is the only use of therapeutic blood letting.

last blood work showed mch at 25.7 (low) and rdw at 15.8 (high). hemoglobin was within normal range (13.4). i had only looked at hemoglobin, but could mch and rdw indicate anemia regardless of hemoglobin count?

Of course: I wouldn't be at all concerned -- popping an iron pill does this. I'm betting the physician isn't either. If iron rx does not correct the anemia rapidly, the physician must seen another cause. Best wishes to you both.

No: Elevated platelets are seen in anemia, nevertheless is not a sign you are doing fine. Best shot is to follow carefully with your doctor and respect the instructions.Usually if it s simple anemia, iron deficient, after iron deposit correction platelets should come back to normal.
