Not good: This is an aggressive brain tumor usually treated with surgery followed by radiotherapy or chemotherapy. Many cases relapse and five year survival rates are in the 25% range. Individual survival depends on surgical completeness, post surgery treatment, co-existing medical conditions, as well as chemotherapy given upon disease relapse.

High: Unfortunately pediatric anaplastic astrocytoma (grade 3 glioma) has high recurrence rates. Degree of resection does impact prognosis. However, those with grade 3 astrocytoma tend to have pfs(progression free survival) of 40 to 50% even with adjuvant chemotherapy and radiation.

Astrocytoma: Anaplastic astrocytoma is a rare malignant brain tumor. Astrocytomas are tumors that develop from certain star-shaped brain cells called astrocytes. Grades i or ii astrocytomas are nonmalignant and may be referred to as low-grade. Grades iii and IV astrocytomas are malignant and may be referred to as high-grade astrocytomas.

husband had surgery to remove anaplastic astrocytoma in oct. finishes radiation therapy next week. just started getting cold sweats. is this normal?

Possible/ talk to MD: Taking steroids? Usually patients are on some dose of steroids this far along the treatments.  The blood sugar levels can get ultered while on steroids.  Monitor that and if it is ok, want to make sure there is no infections etc.  If all is well, taking good dose of tylenol (acetaminophen) before bedtime usually helps.

That's right: I'm sorry to tell you that 3-5 years is right, but remember that's an average.  That means some people live longer than 5 years, and some don't live as long as 3 years.  Each person is different, and survival depends on many factors.  Ask your doctor to be honest with you along the way, and keep hoping...
