i have chronic vaginal group b strep. i'm 65 years old. allergic to penicillan, amoxicilan, any cillans. clindamycin did not work. any suggestions? i now have burning, irritation and may have a uti also. i am prediabetic.

GBS: GBS is one of many germs considered normal in the digestive tract. The outlets proximity to the vagina make it a common contaminant of that area. Unless it is causing a UTI (verified by urine culture), or in the vaginal germs of a pregnant woman about to deliver it is often ignored ( not treated). I think you &amp; your doc need to sort out what/why this is an issue.

can you take amoxicillin for utis?

Accepted Answer

Not reliable: If you have had a positive urine culture for a bacteria known to be senstivie to amoxicillin, it will work very well. However, many bacteria that cause UTI are resistant to it, and amoxicillin should not be used for UTI's if testing hasn't been done. Definitely do not treat yourself with leftover amoxicillin. Discuss with your doctor and follow her advice.

UTI: Amoxicillin is frequently used to treat uti. Not Metronidazole (flagy).  The latter may be used to treat bacterial vaginosis.

is clindamycin stronger than amoxicillin, at equal doses, to temporarily treat a periodontal abscess?

Accepted Answer

Not stronger,: different.  They tend to cover different bacteria. Dentists and oral surgeons may prefer clindamycin for the organisms in the mouth. Better coverage than say amoxicillin. Sometimes it may be only a personal preference.

i have been on low dose amoxicillin for about 3 months. will this prevent accurate test results for a uti?

Accepted Answer

No it won't: Amoxicillin will prevent urinary tract infections.  If you develop an infection resistant Amoxicillin it should show up on a simple urinalysis.

is it okay to take amoxicillin 500 mg for 3 days only and shift to ciprobay 500mg after for treatment of uti?

Accepted Answer

YES: Cipro may be more effective in treating a UTI. Take meds on a full stomach and always add dairy or probiotics to your diet.

i'm currently on the mini pill.  i just got a uti and dr put me on amoxicillin,  will taking this decrease the effectiveness of the mini pill?

Accepted Answer

No: Typical antibiotics do not decrease the effectiveness of birth control pills.   There already is a small risk of failure when using birth control pills, but amoxicillin does not increase that risk.

i was prescribed amoxicillin and clindamycin by 2 different dentist for an abcess. can i take the clindamycin after already taking amox same day?

One or the other: Usually, a person takes one or the other antibiotic for a dental abscess. One can ask the dentist to see if there was a reason to take both antibiotics instead of one or the other... and follow the dentist's instructions.

i live in toronto. doctors can't treat my uti since 2009. found enterococcus, used amoxicillin over and over. who can help me in ny state or close?

Find a urologist: You need a urine culture with sensitivities so that the right antibiotic is given to you.  However, if the urine cultures are negative then you may have a non-infectious bladder condition that feels like a uti, but is not.  A common cause of this is interstitial cystitis and this needs diet modification and other treatments that are not antibiotics. Best of luck.

my 8 year old daughter, who weighs 50 lbs has a uti. she is on amoxicillin 250mg/5ml.  she gets 9ml three times daily.  is this correct dosage for her?

Adequate: It may seem a lot because your using a less concentrated med, but this is the proper dose for a UTI using this med.
