will claritin (loratadine) protect against drug allergies for a full 24hrs? is it safe to use it if i've had hives from other, unrelated antihistamine pills?

Safe but...: It may last that long but may not be potent enough to control your hives.  You may need to up the dose to 4x daily.  It is unusual however to develop hives from taking any kind of antihistamine and thus i would suggest that you consult an allergist to sort this out.

my allergy meds, claritin (loratadine) 10mg, is supposed to work for 24 hrs.  it seems to wear off in less than 12 hrs. can i take 2 or is there a stronger med?

Allergy meds: You may have better results with Allegra (fexofenadine) or zyrtec, both otc.

Desensitization: There are other medications that can prescribed, depending on what is available in your country, steroid nasal sprays help with nasal congestion. Also if you have a board certified allergist, see if you are a candidate for allergen desensitization or allergy shots. They give you long term relief from your allergies.

This is a myth: Antihistamines vary in their onset of action (how quickly they relieve symptoms). Allegra, Zyrtec and Benadryl start helping in 2 hours, Claritin in 4 hours. Claritin is generally the least effective, hence the rumor that it takes days to help.

Loratidine : Loratadine, commonly used to treat allergies, can have side effects including drowsiness, fatigue, abdominal pain, HAs, diarrhea, dry mucous membranes, as well as other side effects. The best option is to let your physician review your current history &amp; response to this med w/ you, and you and s/ he will decide which is the best  option for you now :)

Accepted Answer

Yes: Loratidine and fluticasone nasal spray are effective when used together.  If this is not effective, adding an intranasal antihistamine (rx), such as azelastine (astelin) or olpatadine (patanase) is an option. Dymista is a combination of fluticasone and azelastine and works quickly. None of these products should adversely affect asthma or your current medications.

f/u to last question. waking up with sore throat that goes away. whats best way to figure out if its allergies or acid reflux, besides taking meds for both? have omeprazole & loratadine.

AM sore throat: If your throat is truly sore rather than itchy, I doubt an allergic cause. If it has been occurring for only a few days, a viral infection is more likely,  but if more long-lasting, it could be extreme dryness from sleeping with your mouth open for hours. As for reflux,I would expect some associated heartburn and or acid taste. You could have an Otolaryngologist examine and advise you. ?smoker

Hive: Hives are raised, red and itchy and can occur anywhere on the body including the face.  They improve with antihistamines such as claritin (loratadine).  An allergist is a specialist is finding the cause of such reactions.  In washington, consider nw allergy and asthma.
