No: Alcohol is not a normal food, even though it is high in calories. The baby gets its nourishment from you annd there is no time in life when proper nutrition is more important.

I discourage it: Ingested alcohol decreases prolactin, the hormone needed to support breast feeding.It also transfers in a small amount to the baby. Although some stories in the lay press support alcohol intake during breastfeeding, i discourage it.

Yes: most likely a sip of alcohol will not harm the infant. If one is going to drink alcohol waiting 3 to 4 hours should help. It is not recommended that one drink alcohol if breast-feeding.

Keep on pumping!: Hi Shawn,

A small bit of alcohol should not be a problem with breast feeding.  But if you are having some concern as to the amount in the breast milk you can always "pump and dump".  In 24 hours or less, you can resume using the milk that you pump.  
This way you can keep your milk supply up and protect your baby.

Do not  drink: it is not good for the baby for any  alcohol exposure,  depends your metabolism,  alchol may stay in you body for  a long time,   one glass of wine or a beer for a special  occasion  if  fine if you pump and dump for 12hr, please do not drink regularly when you  breast feeding,  very bad for  baby  brain

i eat out daily and can't be sure if abit of alcohol have been added to the food. now that i'm breastfeeding, will that be a concern?

Alcohol in food: If you are eating food prepared with alcohol most of the time it is cooked- only the flavor remains not the alcohol.  It is wise to limit alcohol intake while breastfeeding however cooked foods prepared with alcohol will not be an issue.  However "jello shots" where the alcohol is not cooked, not a good idea.

Not dangerous!: "classic allergenic foods:" cow's milk; eggs; peanuts; tree nuts; wheat; soy; fish.  Some breast-feeding women say that avoiding  these items or other spicy/gassy foods, such as onions/cabbage, can help — but this hasn't been proved through research. If your baby becomes fussy or develops a rash, diarrhea or congestion soon after nursing, these signs could indicate a food allergy & need to avoid.

Tobacco and other : Drugs cause harm to the infant, most foods are quite safe.

No: Alcohol is secreted in milk so when breast feeding better not to drink alcohol.
