i had a total knee replacement three months ago.  my knee locks up, is extreamly stiff, clanks, and makes popping noises.  it is not infected. why?

See your surgeon: Check in with your orthpaedic surgeon if you are still having issues. Knee replacement can have a lengthy recovery. Your doctor can check you for problems that may benefit from treatment.

Knee locking: You should have this discussion with your surgeon. If he does not give you a satisfactory answer and solution, it is okay to get a second opinion.

Get evaluated: This issue needs evaluation. The two major causes are infection and loosening. See the orthopedist who performed the replacement if possible but see someone.

You need to: follow up with your orthopedist.  This could be related to your knee replacement but it could also be something new.  Either way you need to follow up with your physician for a re-evaluation.  You can certainly take Ibuprofen or acetaminophen for pain in the meantime, as long as you have no medical condition that would prohibit either of these medications, but you need to be checked out.

i had a total knee replacement three years ago i have done two marathons and walk and swim every day. i'm having significant pain. is this normal?

Not normal : There are people with new knee replacements  who do complete  triathlons successfully. Although a  person may have knee pain (even without a joint replacement) for a few days after a marathon I would not expect you to have severe pain for weeks after an event. Occasionally the hardware of the new knee replacement can loosen resulting in pain symptoms. Please follow up with your orthopedic doctor.

i had two total knee replacement in left knee a few yr ago the first failed . i am 47 now and i have had really bad calf pain for the last couple year?

Calf pain: Please see your doctor.  You may need some PT, bracing, or surgery.  Knowing the facts will help you resolve things.  Sorry you have been through all this.  Peace and good health.

Not really: The looseness will progress and may make a revision more difficult, so a revision is truly the best option

Yes: Total knee replacement has a limited life span and we try and delay until absolutely necessary. That being said, there are patients with rheumatoid and other arthritides that might be a candidate. Weight and activity level has alot to do with longevity of total knee.

Several possibilitie: These are the things that can all of a sudden cause pain at any time with a total knee of any age:  tendinitis, bursitis, stress fracture, contusion, muscle strain or pull,  bacterial infection, viral infection, medication reaction, soft tissue pinched between the implants, loosening of the implant from the bone cement, wear down of the bearing causing inflammation reaction to plastic particles.

does the second total knee operation usually bother patients less? had a right 4 years ago and now having a left.

Each one different: Can't predict but there are things you can do to get ready.  Ask for exercises you can do to strengthen the muscles that work the knee.  Eat a healthy diet with lots of different fresh vegetables, cut way back on processed starchy foods; these measures cut inflammation in the body.  After surgery, work hard with the physiotherapists to get that knee moving.  Good luck!
