Variable: Everyone responds differently to medications. My experience has not shown rebound very often at one week of Afrin (oxymetazoline) use in most patients particularly when steroids used concurrently. Since you have BPH, Afrin (oxymetazoline) may increase your urinary difficulties, however and caution must be used. See your doctor if congestion worsens or difficulty urinating increases.

Yes: One can become addicted to afrin (oxymetazoline) and it will be very difficult to get off it. Patients have had to take a very strong steroid(prednisone), to be able to get off the afrin (oxymetazoline). Noses of people with afrin (oxymetazoline) dependency look similar to noses of people who are Cocaine addicts.You should see a physician to get to the bottom of the problem.

Short term only: Afrin is only meant for short term use. If you need something frequently then you need to try other medications like nasal steroids and nasal saline. You should not use Afrin more than three days in a month. More frequent use may cause rebound congestion.

Saline sinus washes: Over use of Afrin (oxymetazoline) can cause rhinitis mendicamentosa, or nose drop rhinitis. This can lead to a permanent stuffy nose.  Try Neilmed sinus rinses instead; much safer.

Accepted Answer

No: It is ok to use afrin (oxymetazoline) for 3-4 nights in a row and then stop. It can be addicting to the nose very quickly (by 7 days of daily usage) and then you get rebound stuffiness from the afrin (oxymetazoline). If you have chronic stuffiness you need an evaluation to look for allergies and other options to improve your symptoms.

Accepted Answer

Yes: I routinely recommend Afrin for three days after nasal cautery.  Also use saline for crusting, saline gel to coat the nasal musosa and no vigorous nose blowing.
