AVN: It really depends on if there  is collapse of the femoral head.  If the femoral head has already collapsed it is too late and he will require hip replacement.  If it has not collapsed there are some options but the success of the options is not great.  One surgical option is core decompression which has less than a 50% chance of success, bisphosphonates (fosamax) may help with limited success.
