Desire for care: Though i certainly may be wrong in your situation, it seems to me that your wearing a diaper and sucking on a pacifier is probably not so much a fetish as an expression of your desire for someone to care for you like a baby, providing all your needs. Psychotherapy may be worth your consideration.

Pacifier use: Besides the social stigma that may result, use of a device such as this may have a negative effect on the dentition. With adults who have a thumb sucking habiit, you often see the front teeth not coming together properly and in some cases, the upper front teeth will flare out causing a "buck tooth" appearance.

Yes and NO: Stimulation of the lips stimulates pleasure centers, explaining why kissing, smoking, gum chewing, thumbsucking & pacifiers have soothing effect.Cultural expectations push thumbsucking into a covert activity as we get older.Long term distortion of teeth & thumb is problematic.Substituting one taboo habit for another may help in the short term but finding another method of self soothing would be better.

Thumb Sucking: Adult thumb-sucking can definitely be tied to an anxiety disorder. In fact, the thumb sucking ; pacifier use could cause you to swallow significant air, making reflux symptoms worse.  I would consider cognitive behavioral therapy to find out the cause of the behavior--it can lead to chronic fungal and bacterial infections of the thumb that could be "digit losing". The cbt will give tools to help.

is it possible for piecemeal swallowing be fixed for a young adult?

Accepted Answer

Yes: Every person that swallows with an intact second phase of swallowing, or piecemeal swallowing has a fixed threshold lower amount  that will initiate this type of swallowing. Below that threshold, whether there is a swallowing problem or not, piecemeal swallowing will NOT happen. It is a bulk way of moving all of the food bolus  down the esophagus in one big hunk when it does happen

i swallowed large amounts of gum as a child. could this cause any problems as an adult?

Accepted Answer

No: As with food products, gum too will pass through the gut without problem. Some studies have shown chewing gum to be effective in reducing symptoms of gastric reflux (heartburn). But there have been no studies showing that swallowing gum is problematic.

How small?: Small bone fragments may pass harmlessly through your gut. However, if they turn sideways, they may get stuck at any point. This may cause local inflammation (in the esophagus and throat it may feel like something is stuck when it is not), rupture, foreign body reactions, and impede eating as food backs up behind the obstructing bone. Tiny bone fragments may not be readily found on x-ray.

had neg swab for strep on sat. told they don't culture adults. still hurts today when i swallow. do i give it 5-6 days and take the ibu or go back in?

Hmm: If you are getting worse, having fevers, having ear pain, can't move neck, having trouble opening mouth, or can't tolerate anything by mouth, then definetly go back right away for followup.  If your cutlrure was a true negative, then you have a virus, which should be improving after 5-7 days and not getting worse or plateu-ing.

If you are unsure, go back in!

ENT doc: There are many causes for difficult swallowing - dysphagia. See an ENT doc who can examine the patient and do swallowing studies.

does swallowing high amount of toothpaste containing fluoride for a long time cause kidney problem or effect kidney? what are the possible heath problem associated with long term ingestion of adult toothpaste in large amounts?

: Toothpaste not meant to be ingested.. it's not a nutrient or food. Ingesting large amounts of toothpaste, as you've posted, can have detrimental effects on your health. Use it as an adjunct to good oral health, not as a food source.
