Start w medical: Eval.  It may uncover medical issues that need to be addressed. Cognitive behavioral therapy can be quite effective. Psych meds may be indicated. Aim for daily exercise, 8 hours of sleep per night & good nutrition w 5 servings of veggies & 4 of fruit per day. Try tai chi, yoga, qi gong, progressive muscle relaxation, deep breathing exercises & meditation.  Spend time with friends and stay active.

Depression : Depression is very treatable. However, i know of nothing that will make him feel happy or shed his other depressive symptoms between today and tommorrow. I see anxiety tagged. Deep breathing can help with that. Take a deep, slow breath in through the nostrils. Raise the arms to get a full breath. Hold for the count of five. Exhale slowly. Repeat x 12. This might help him to feel a little more centered. Take care.

Heard of Latuda (lurasidone): It can be used for bipolar disorder. I suggest you carefully review your symptoms and response to the medication with your psychiatrist or doctor. Doctors tailor the medications to each individual and you may respond well to this.

My response: A urine drug screen does not always pick up what it is designed to do.  Would repeat.
However, you need to know that use of narcotics on a daily basis can cause Chronic Daily Migraines, so, best you handle future needs with a different approach.  Talk to your internist.

Winter blues: Depression is not seasonal; it persists year round, unless treated. Even then it may take some time to feel "normal". Winter blues is also called seasonal affective disorder (sad); usually occurs in fall & winter, when we have less exposure to sunlight. Sad responds some to antidepressants but even more to full-spectrum light—sun or special light therapy lamps. Even grow lights may help.

Clinical course: Depression caused by medication will usually  lift soon after the medication is stopped. Depressive illness will not.

This is common in : Depression and is called diurnal variation. Laboratory studies have shown that moodis regulated by a circadian clock interacting with the sleep homeostat. Circadian means 24-hour period. This actually is a predictor of a good response to antidepressant treatment. Aggressive medicinal treatment as well as psychotherapy can bring this under good control. Discuss this further with her psychiatrist if you are not yet feeling well.

It could be both: Or at least the begining of both. People who are facing a chronic illness, often see fewer options in life and this can lead to depression. A good counselor who deals with issues of chronic illness should be able to help you sort thngs out and give you options whether you are depressed or just streessed out.
