what cough medication can i give my one year old son for a dry cough?

Let him be: Studies in the US over a decade ago have shown little to no benefit of common cough meds to kids under six. They can actually thicken secretions where they are harder to cough up/out. Sometimes a little lemon juice added to a spoonful of honey will both help and be accepted by cranky kids.

Cough: Cough in a smoker is always a concern.  If an inhaler does not provide relieve it is not likely to be asthma. It can be as simple as reflux/ heartburn (even if you do not have  the classic symptoms) or post nasal drip.  Allergies may be a trigger as well.  There are over the counter medications that can be used to treat each of these issues.  If these are not helpful seek further evaluation.

Skip that medicine: Most otc cough meds do not really help. Consider and allergy especially if child does not have a fever. Get air purifier and take to md to be sure not asthma like symptoms. Remove stuffed animals from bedding are, vacuume well. If cough persist, must see pediatrician.

Bad bug: Unfortunately, a nonproductive cough and no fevers is usually not a bronchitis that can be treated with antibiotics.  The headache and vertigo are also possibly just nuisance viral symptoms that need to be treated with otc analgesics, chicken soup, and bedrest.  If you start blowing or coughing out green/yellow junk after 10 days, then it may be time for antibiotics.

DIagnosis needed!: Before medication. Too many unknowns here that needs to be worked up by a PCP, who can evaluate what is going on, and do the necessary blood work. S/he will have to look why you are having photophobia (not normal), dry cough, and headache can be from the photophobia. You may need an eye doctor consult to evaluate this further! Definitely need to be seen by a doctor, who can put it all together!

Raid is the problem: The raid spray is irriating your mucous membrane from inhalation, and if gargling with saline rinses don't help, you can call the poison control center (for your state), and they will give you antidotes. Don't believe that cough syrup will work, as it's primarily sugar with some expectorant. Don't delay, so you can start feeling better.

: Without a full review of his past records/testing and treatment plus a physical exam it is not possible to chart a course for treatment. It is reasonable to keep a symptom chart/diary with all past/current meds and take that information to a follow-up visit. These are not rare, but each are an individual patient whose treatment will differ based on findings.
