my husband suffers from acid reflux and every morning has a coughing and mucus   spell and somedays throws up.  everyday.  what can help him?

Exam/GI expert: He will need examination, upper endoscopy and prescription medication. Until seen I would recommend OTC Pepcid AM/PM-Prilosec or Nexium (esomeprazole) may help; however, he must be examined. I suggest GI evaluation.

my son has acid reflux but takes only over-the-counter meds. he throws up every morning and now has blood.he also just recently seen blood in his stoo?

See MD: At this point the over the counter medications are not sufficient.  Evaluation for serious issues by a doctor need to be done.  Blood in these places is not normal and requires evaluation by a doctor in person.

Yes: Nausea is a common sign of reflux - especially late at night.

Blood: Reddish brown is most likely blood.  The acid turns some of the blood dark.  The bright red means it hasnt had a chance to turn black.  Should be investigated by a stomach specialist.

Take a good Antacid: There are many good antacids which can stop formation of acid and provide excellent relief from acid reflux. You could pick up over the counter products like zantac (ranitidine) or pepcid(inexpensive) or prilosec(a bit more expensive but also a better drug than the other two.

CBT: Have you considered seeing a psychologist to help deal with your anxiety? Cognitive behavioral therapy may be beneficial. It may just improve your quality of life. Make sure that you are worked up by your physician for any underlying medical problems as well. Take care.

Not normal: See your family doctor about this.  Specific tests need to be performed to see what's going on.

Yes: Vomiting may occur with GERD.

Go back to doctor: As you already know this is not normal.  Did the doctor do an endoscopy?  Do you have helicobacter?  You may want to get a second opinion.  Go soon.

i have persistant heartburn that gets so bad that i throw up then i feel a little better. i have tried acid reflux pills, and heartburn pills but nothing helps.  i don't know what is causing this.

At : At this point it is time to see your doctor. You will likely need an endoscopy (a procedure where your doctor will be able to look at your upper GI tract including your stomach). You may have a hiatal hernia, ulcers, gastritis/esophagitis etc. This is a serious issue since you are now vomiting for relief. Please schedule a visit with your doctor right away. In the meantime avoid any spicy foods, caffeine, acidic foods, medications including ibuprofen, aspirin, or aleve (naproxen).
