is there such thing as acid rebound when coming off a ppi or any acid reducer? or are you just experiencing existing reflux due to cutting medication?

Accepted Answer

: Long term use of "ppi's or acid reducer" followed by symptoms which were incorporate in your taking the ppi's, is probably just due to normal acid production. Consult your GI physician for guidance on further use of ppi's.

why does my left leg hurt the upper leg after i take acid reducer for my stomach? should i wrap my upper leg? try different medication? i try to contact my doctor she doesnt have anything until september 1?

: I doubt the acid reliever causes your leg pain. More description of your symptom is needed to determine a dfferential diagnosis. I don't know about other primary care MD's, but I wouldn't expect my patient to wait that long to be seen when she/he is having pain. I would fit them in or at least discuss the problem over the phone &amp; then make a decision of when to see the patient or what can be done.

i'm on day 1 of taking omeprazole for chronic acid reflux but it hasn't started working yet. is it safe to additionally take antacids with this drug?

Yes: go ahead and take the antacids especially if you know it works.  It can take awhile to get relief.  The inflammation can take several months to heal.  Also don't smoke or use nicotine, caffeine or decaf coffee, reduce to an optimal weight and elevate the head of your bed 4-6 inches on an incline so that the acid at night stays away form the esophagus.  The body makes the most acid at night

recovering from virus, used advil, (ibuprofen) sudafed nyquil.  now have bad acid reflux with gagging.  on prevacid/antacids but still gagging.  diet?  drugs?

Gagging: You should see a gastroenterologist and probably get an upper endoscopy to see what is wrong with your stomach or esophagus.

No: If you are currently on a medication that is not working, you should see your doctor instead of taking 2 at the same time.  The doctor may need to change the dose or prescribe a different medication.  Also, your problem could be from something else that will not respond to your acid reducing medication like an h. Pylori infection.

Probably ok: However, there are potential issues with overusing antacids, even over the counter remedies.  If you have refractory heartburn, a physician needs to address the problem and rule out potentially serious causes that can include infection/malignancy.  Avoid nsaids (ibuprofen, aspirin, Advil, Aleve, (naproxen) etc.) as these exacerbate irritation of the stomach lining.

Ranitidine 75 mg: take once or twice daily, if need more, get consult

Very unlikely: By acid reducer I suppose you mean a medication like ranitidine / cimetidine or omeprazole / pantoprazole etc.... These meds are frequently taken in "double dose."

Try: This could depend on the degree of acid problems the teenager has. Step wise you could try bland diet with Maalox . Other options include Peptobismol, Zantac, (ranitidine) Prilosec. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor for more answers.
