i am on singulair 10 mg daily and zyrtec. i have forgotten both for the past two days and just took a singulair. is it ok to take benadryl as well?

is it ok to take primatene tablets? i have really bad allergies and was prescribed singulair (montelukast) two years ago. zyrtec does not help me. symptoms persist and now i also have chest tightness and i squeek when i breathe at night.

Agree : Agree with both answers. From what you describe you probably have seasonal asthma that is not controlled on what you are taking and you need to receive appropriate prescription medication.

my 4 year old takes zyrtec 1 tsp and singulair 4mg every night. she got a couple mosquito bites yesterday and they are swollen. can she have a dose of benadryl also tonight? her left eye has also been watering for several days even with both allergy meds.

Single dose: it is in the same class but a single dose of Benadryl (diphenhydramine) is ok tonight . For the eyes you may try over the counter Zaditor eye drops .

Yes you can: You can take extra Benadryl (diphenhydramine) but it would make you drowsy so you should not drive. If those do not help, you might need to seek help from a local allergist.

Fantastic!: No, there are no long term problems with using both of these on a daily basis. They are doing exactly what we want them to - no ER visits or hospitalizations, no need for oral or IV steroids to keep your asthma controlled. Keep up the good work and make sure to exercise your lungs as well to build up their capacity and good health! Flu shots will be available in about 2 months for this season....

No elevation : Tiger, i can't find any evidence that any of those medications will increase your alk phos and i used them with patients regularly. Singulair (montelukast) is an anti-inflammatory used for asthma/allergies and it blocks certain areas of the inflammatory pathway. Both Hydroxyzine and zyrtec are traditional anti-histamines and block histamine binding to cells. Do you have elevated alk phos? Why was it checked?

Sure can: if you are out of Zyrtec, Benadryl (diphenhydramine) if fine. He can take it with Singulair without problem.  Remember, it will make him sleepy  (home work first!)

: It is not clear what you mean by 'advantage'. I know of no such drug. Neither Singular or Zyrtec would be on my list of first line asthma meds. You need to meet with his doc and develop a written asthma plan based on a controller med like Flovent and a rescue inhaler like albuterol. Written plans allow home changes based on day to day changes in symptoms.

LORITADINE: Loritadine is the chemical name for Claritin, (loratadine) a non sedating OTC antihistamine that is well tolerated by most kids. Fexofenadine (Allegra) is also available.
