what happens if i accidentally inject a bit of air/air bubbles with im injection? is there a chance it hits a vein??

Accepted Answer

: Even if that tiny amount of air entered a vein I think you wouldn't suffer any harm. Some experts feel that it would take 200 ml of air to be lethal, but some  feel that 20ml may cause harm.

Ignore it: I doubt you injected it into a vein. It is more likely that the needle passed through a small vein and caused some bleeding. If nothing has happened by now, nothing will.

Very unlikely. : Very unlikely .  Should that occur, probably the worst thing that would happen is a superficial ulceration in the skin, if you are asking about superficial spider veins.

Vein injections: This is a difficult question to answer completely.  There are medicines that are meant to take orally, subcutaneously and intramuscularly.  There are also medications that are meant to be taken intravenously.

can injections actually be making veins more noticeable?

Accepted Answer

Yes: Initially after injection enlargement of the veins is due to inflammation from the injectant, but then it should subside over the next few weeks. Occasionally an area of a vein will get some blood trapped in it and it will look enlarged, bluish in color, and be quite tender. These need to be drained to relieve discomfort. Please follow your doctor's advice on wearing support hose to prevent these.

No: Many mistakenly believe this but it is actually exactly the opposite of what really happens.  It is safe to say that treating your veins now will help to prevent you from developing as much new vein trouble as you would have done otherwise without treatment.  Unfortunately, though, nothing can guarantee that no new veins will ever show up in your lifetime even after effective  treatment.

Phlebitis: Is an inflammation of a vein, which is another rare complication of the venipuncture procedure. Common symptoms of phlebitis are: pain, swelling and redness.The local trauma or injury to the vein can also cause phlebitis. The warm compresses, elevation of the involved extremity and nsaids otc and  “tincture of time” will be enough to treat phlebitis. 
If concerned, see your pcp for evaluation.

Infusion: Infusion is the term used for administration of substances into the body through veins, but also into body cavities, via tubing or catheters. Usually the rate of infusion is more gradual at so many cc's per minute. Sometimes a medication is given quickly as a bolus with a syringe inserted directly into a vein or into a port in iv tubing which is already in place. Ceftriaxone has bn given iv push

: If you're shown proper technique and location (depends on medication, volume, etc), it's difficult to hit an artery or major vein. If you DON'T follow proper technique, then it's fully possible to hit an artery or vein. Air bubbles in an artery can cause air embolism (essentially a stroke). In a vein they may do similar, although not nearly as likely.
