No one knows.: IPF is primarily a fibrotic disease of the lung whose cause is unknown. Most people do not survive 5 years beyond diagnosis.  Since we do not know what causes IPF it is hard to know why it progresses faster in some.  Poor prognostic factors are older age, big tobacco history, low body weight, and extensive disease on imaging.

Don't smoke with IPF: Ipf, if you are referring to interstitial pulmonary fibrosis, is a disease of the lungs in which the tissue surrounding the critical respiratory units(alveoli) becomes infiltrated with an abnormal substance and often can be permanent.  It can severely impair the gas exchange function of the lungs and renders lung function marginal.  Smoking usually not causative but will worsen symptoms.

No: You gauge how bad IPF is based on pulmonary function tests and your symptoms.  CT helps as well.

Not sure what your q: I'm not sure what you are asking.  True ipf has no cure or treatment from any medical tradition.  You are free to pursue quack remedies, but you would be better off getting him in a clinical trial than trying that.

A good question : To ask your husband's doctor, rather than someone who has never met him, seen his lung function tests or cts. Ipf is a very difficult disease to treat, and currently nothing is known to be effective.  Sometimes lung transplant is the answer, but it often trades one problem for another. Make sure he s seen b y someone with broad experience in treating ipf.  Never shy away from a 2nd opinion.

Category...: Pulmonary fibrosis is when the lungs become scarred. There are many causes of pulmonary fibrosis. Ipf, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, is one disorder that causes this scarring. In ipf, the reason for the pulmonary fibrosis is not known.

It's all in the ches: All the conditions that you mention - idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, cardiomegaly (enlarged heart), and gastritis / acid reflux affect the chest. The simplest answer is usually correct. I suspect that IPF has caused pulmonary hypertension (high pressures in the lungs) which causes an enlarged heart. woke 10 weeks ago, couldnt breathe, antibiotics,steroids,inhalers, 2xclear chest x-rays. still cant breathe, cough, white phlegm when in bed &take deep breathe, lung vibrates/opens at the very end. do i have ipf? gave up smoking when this started?

COVID 19 Serologic testing may be discussed with your PCP. A smoker is more likely to have a prolonged course following respiratory illness. Continue to avoid smoke exposure and smoking. my husband has a chronic cough for least 3 yrs.  had acupuncture,  lung biopsy nov 2012 found ipf, throat specialist. doesn't cough when laying down.

Ipf: Interstitial pulmonary fibrosis can be treated with immunosuppressants, he probably will need to see a pulmonologist at a large referral center, they probably know of ongoing studies on the topic and can guide his treatment.

Fair  need to follow: Needs  to  follow  pft   every  6  months/6  minwalk  test/ct chest  as  needed//echocadiogram as  well to  guide  prognosis.
