my daughter is abroad for a semester. she just told me she's had a hard flat lump under the skin on the bottom of her foot for about 4 months now. it doesn't hurt. she said it's not quite the size of a quarter and it's near her heel. what could it be?

Plantar wart: It probably is a plantar wart. 
She could do warm soaks of the foot and apply an OTC topical for now &amp; have it checked by your family physician when she returns.

Spot on foot: 1st of all congratulations!  not too many ppl make it a habit to check the bottom of their feet.  You can check to see if there is any fluid in that bump, otherwise it may just resolve on its own.  If there is fluid in the bump or it does not resolve in ~14 days.  Ask for a podiatry referral.  It can be something as simple as a smudge/dirt, wart, blister, or skin lesions.

Callus: You might have developed a callus underneath the ball of your foot.  This is normal due to increase pressure.  You can try using moisturizer cream to your feet after getting them wet, you can try an over the counter pumice stone as well to help soften and get rid of the hardened skin.  If there is still pain a better description and a referral to a podiatrist may help!

A callous: This is likely to be a callous. See a podiatrist and have the foot evaluated.

Hard to tell.: Pretty limited info, but could be a ganglioma or tendon sheath nodule or ? Would require a good exam to precisely localize the lump and therefore better understand it's origins.

Plantar fibroma: If its under the skin possibly a ganglion cyst or plantar fibroma which are both benign soft tissue masses. Options include watch and wait, shoe modification, padding, injection theray or surgical removal.
