how can you tell the difference between cancer and just a benign lump or benign swollen lymph node on an ultrasound image. its in my neck.

Difficult if at all: Best way to tell is to take a biopsy and have it evaluated by a pathologist.

Hard to say: Certainly nodes that are enlarging would be a cause for concern and likely further workup. US is not very good at characterizing benign vs malignant thyroid or lymph tissue; consult with your endocrinologist or surgeon, as a biopsy of one or more nodes could be in order.

Possibly: At node on the neurovascular bundle, that is carotid artery, jugular vein and vagus n.. is in essence a jugular vein node which most often represents possible pathology.  Frequently pharyngeal and thyroid lesions spread to this node.  Without biopsy, if the node is firm a diagnosis cant be made.  If an additional node or enlargement occurs then excisional biopsy needede

No: Not necessarily.  A lymph node that rapidly enlarges can be painful.

Accepted Answer

Not absolutely: A painful, swollen lymph is most likely an inflammatory event, and should recede. However, if it persists, further investigation will be necessary. An enlarging, non-tender node(s) can be cause for concern. See your doctor.

i had one swollen lymph node, no other symptoms. removed node today for biopsy. if it comes back cancer, will removal be enough ?

Cannot say: Hopefully, it will not be malignant.  Should it be malignant, you will likely have a workup with scans and other tests to determine the extent and maybe even the origin of the cancer.  That will determine what other modalities of therapy you are offered.  All options (surgery, radiation, or chemo) are on the table until more is known.  Again, hope it is not cancer.  Best to you.

had strept for awhile but now strept has cleared up. had 1 swollen lymph node when will it go down or is this cancer? it seems like it goes down then back up?

: It is not unusual for the lymph node to be swollen for up to a month after strept. And it can go up and down. It also can be somewhat larger forever following the initial reaction.

Many can: Non-hodgkin's lymphoma and hodgkin's lymphoma commonly cause swelling of lymph nodes.

But any cancer that spreads to a lymph node can cause swelling of the involved lymph nodes.

Accepted Answer

Possibly: A swollen lymph node in the armpit could be from breast cancer but in most patients, it is much more likely to be a benign swelling from a number of other causes.  Regardless, you should have your doctor check it out.

does lymph node cancer causes swollen lymph node to get bigger or will it just stay same size i have a non rubbery and its not hard but not soft just feels like skin.lymph node swollen under skin can't see it. noticed it 2 month ago no change in size?

: Lymph node cancer presents with enlargement of the lymph nodes in special locations like underarm/armpits or neck and sometimes in the groins.
These nodes will then be easily palpable and start increasing in size and easy to feel with your hands.
I doubt that you have lymph node cancer.
If you want to be certain get a medical examination done by a doctor.
