The "Window Period": Window period is the time it takes lymphocytes to develop antibodies to an antigen.  This is usually 4-6 weeks but can be as long as 3 months.  By 3 months after exposure...97% of people will have antibodies to antigen.  In rarer instances it may take up to 6 months to develop antibodies.  After 6 months..99% of people exposed will have antibodies to viral antigens.  Therefore the 3 to 6 months!!!

Yes: Yes. However, if a person (unwisely or unfortunately, depending on his or her life's circumstances) has recurring possible HIV exposures, he may get a screening test every 3 months. The is for people who have REAL recurring possible HIV exposures, but NOT for people who don't have recurring exposures but can't stop worrying about a past possible HIV exposure, which would be a treatable OCD issue.

: Probably OK without further testing. The test might miss up to 1% of infections at 40 days. If you were at truly high risk (e.g. unprotected anal sex with a male partner, a known infected partner not on treatment, etc) it would be a good idea to retest after 45 days.

: Theoretically it could happen after a negative result at 4 weeks, but extremely rarely. I've never seen such a case personally. Six weeks is 100% conclusive for the HIV AgAb (4th generation) blood tests; it isn't necessary to retest at 8 weeks.

To be sure: It can take more than several weeks for some people to develop an antibody to HIV, but less than 3 months. So by retesting at 3 months or later there would be little or no chance of missing that a particular person has acquired the virus.

HIV nucleic acid: test. A negative antibody test at 6 weeks does not exclude HIV infection. A negative HIV nucleic acid test would. The odds of getting the infection depends on the type of exposure and the viral load in the fluid to which you were exposed.
