There : There are no cough and cold medicines for a 4 month old. You can use pediatric ocean spray drops for her congestion. Also put a humidifier or cool mist vaporizer in the room where she sleeps. If she continues to cough, has fever, her cough sounds high pitched like a seal, or you hear wheezing, seek medical care.

my 4 mth old  is congested, sneezing, wet cough, runny nose and has ran a fever but low grade. what can i do for her? can i put vapor rub on her feet?

Saline spray: Saline nasal spray is safe and effective for what appears to be a viral upper respiratory infection.  It helps to thin the mucus as well as soothe.

Low grade temp: Would not give Acetaminophen for this, rather run a humidifier, suction the nose out with some saline drops and makes sure he is not having any difficulty breathing.   Babies have trouble feeding when their nose is plugged up.  If you have any doubts take your baby in to see the doctor.

Possibly a reaction: from immunizations, but if your child cannot take anything by mouth without vomiting it would be recommended that you contact your pediatrician.

i have a four month old who has a cold. he is on ammoxicillian, but has a chesty, phlemy cough. he broke out in a cold sweat w/ no fever. e.r.?

Symptomatic care: Colds will not respond to antibiotics.Offer symptomatic care in the form of nasal suction, nose drop, vaporizer and fluids.The phlegm cough is probably due to a post nasal drip , so help him out by elevating his mattress instead of lying flat.

Reflux?: Babies" nasal cavities are particularly narrow and are prone to be obstructed. The most common cause is just air dryness that causes the mucus to dry up and obstruct the nose. Next, is the common cold. Your baby could have been born with an abnormality. Last but not least, babies who have reflux often vomit through the nose as well.

Vick's : Vick's vapor rub is not recommended for babies under 2 years old.  The ingredients in it can act as an airway irritant causing swelling and respiratory distress in babies and young children.  Scientists looked at vick's to see how it worked and found that the cold sensation caused by the menthol tricked the brain into thinking it was breathing better, but in reality, it did not help with the actually nasal congestion.  It may make you feel better, but it doesn't actually help breathing.

The best methods for treating congestion in an infant are saline nasal drops, nasal suctioning with a bulb syringe and a cool or warm mist humidifier.  There are no safe cough or cold medications for children under 4 years of age.

If your child seems to be having difficulty breathing, call their doctor right away.

ive used saline drops on my 4 month old for a blocked nose but they only cleared the mucus but still congested.  my dr prescribed floxinase drops for her, are they safe?

I never use them: Vigorous nasal washout (babies never like it) is the most effective way to help. Just dropping it in seldom helps. The other med is not cleared by the drug maker for that use, but I doubt it would be dangerous. I suppose the doc just gave it to give you something to try. Removing  all airborne irritants like perfumes, dust, smoke, etc. will help over time.

should zofran (ondansetron) be given to a 4 month old with rsv? i have a 4 month old grandson that has been diagnosed with rsv. he is running a fever and throwing everything up. even pedialyte. he is very congested.

Even : Even though zofran (ondansetron) is approved for use in infants who are vomiting from chemotherapy, it should be used with extreme caution in any other setting.  Zofran (ondansetron) works by blocking neurotransmitters in the nausea center of the brain.  If you are vomiting because something is giving you nausea (like chemo, a stomach bug or motion sickness) then zofran (ondansetron) works well.

Often, children who have bronchiolitis (the illness caused by rsv) vomit secondary to coughing up and gagging on mucus, not because they are nauseous.  In that case, zofran (ondansetron) wouldn't help the vomiting.  It is very important to try and keep your grandson hydrated during this illness.  Using a bulb suction prior feeds can help.  Sometimes sips of pedialyte from a spoon instead of from a bottle can give small enough amounts to prevent choking and vomiting.

You should call your grandchild's doctor if you see any signs of dehydration. These signs are:

- dry mouth 
-few or no tears when crying 
-excessive fussiness 
-fewer than 3-4 wet diapers/day 
-no urination in 6-8 hours 
-sunken soft spot 
-dry, wrinkled or doughy skin 
-appears weak or limp 
-decreased alertness or increased sleepiness 
-rapid breathing or fast heart rate

also, if appears to be worsening, having difficulty breathing, or if his fever persists, you should also contact his doctor.  Good luck!  RSV is miserable - i'm so sorry he has it.

is it bad to take 4 month old cough drops?

Cough in a 4 mos old: Cough medications are not recommended for children  under 2 years of age.  Try saline nose drops it helps clear the nose, sooth the  throat &amp; calms  the cough.  If cough is frequent  or associated with fever, wheezing or any difficulty breathing you should take him to his pediatrician . I  hope he gets better soon.
