could a healing fracture of 3rd and 4th metatarsal cause intense pain in those toes? i don't remember injuring the foot to cause this.

Neuroma pain.: There could be a very good chance you have a morton's neuroma. It is a nerve between your 3rd and 4th metatarsals that can cause intense pain to the respected toes. It is worse with tight shoes on and relieved by going without shoes. I was suggest having it looked at by a Podiatrist. Probably not a fracture since there is no obvious trauma. neuromas are a common problem.

How far off?: The three weeks since your injury have certainly substantially reduced or eliminated immediate  treatment options. But rest easy. As long as the alignment position is minimal, there should be little affect on healing.  These cases are best assessed with a full set of immediate post fracture x-rays and immediate reduction x-rays.

Foot fractures: A fracture is usually the result of an injury to the foot. A stress fracture can be caused by repetitive motion and stress on an area of the foot.

Foot pain: No it is abnormal;so go get a physical exam and possibly an Xray as well as appropriate therapy/advice based on findings

Stick to the plan...: Follow the instructions given to you by your doctor. That you have no pain us a good sign but does not mean you should deviate from the plan

6wks: Classically, bones take about 6 weeks to heal.  Some bones like the base of the fifth metatarsal can take longer or never heal.  Spiral fractures tend to heal because of the increased surface area of the spiral.  Just make sure they don't heal in a twisted position.

4+ weeks: Most non displaced fractures will be fairly comfortable in 4 weeks or so, but you'll probably be stiff and somewhat achey for another month or two. A general rule is 75% healing at 8 weeks.

Depends...: How long has it been on? What kind of basketball are you talking about? I would strongly suggest walking first for a few days to get your strength and coordination back and get out of the habit of limping. Then go to jogging for a few days....Then try sprinting. You need to be able to cut, pivot and run backwards in order to "play". There is nothing wrong with shooting around now.
