No: No, it's fine to take Amoxicillin in this case.  Amoxicillin can be given to pregnant women too.  As long as you do not have an allergy to it (it is a relative of penicillin).

my dr told me to take 2000mg of amoxicillin at once before dental procedure. i have mitral valve prolapse. im afraid of the serious side effects of taking that much at once. how risky is it? i need to go to the dentist twice to treat cavities?

: I don't consider the dose risky at all. The medication will be at a peak in concentration within minutes and flushes out through your kidneys quickly. It is essentially gone after 4 hours. If you want to protect your valve with a standard preventive dose follow your dentist 's suggestion.

Premedication: The recommended dose for prophylaxis of bacteremia caused by dental treatments is 2 grams of Amoxicilin 1 hour before dental appointment. Increasing the dose to 3 g does not increase the prophylaxis. You can increase time taking the Amoxicilin to 2 hours but best is to stay within the guidelines. It is also recommended to take it at least 30 min prior the appointment.

It is normal: If you have cardiac condition that needs prophylactic medication , that is pretty standard . In some cases you may have to take through IV and another type of medication. This is to put higher blood  concentration of the drug should there is a chance that bacteria is released in large quantity . The high antibiotic level will allow the bacteria killed before they have access to your heart

Assuming 400mg/5mL: 500mg (1.25 teaspoons) every 8 hours for 5 full days.  But that's just the recommended dose.  Your Dentist, in concert with your Pediatrician, the people who know your child best, may have different dosage recommendation.

It is not: We use both in practice and many factors go into which antibiotic we will use for a particular patient. The type of infection, duration, is the patient a good pill taker...

i missed an amoxicillin pill after dental work.  i read online that i should not take twice the dosage to make up for it. is that so?

Accepted Answer

Not a big deal: Amoxicillin work best when there is a steady blood level concentration. If you missed a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose and you take 2 doses a day, take the one you missed and the next dose 5  hours later. Take care.

i am on amoxicillin for a dental abscess, is it okay to pop it?

Accepted Answer

No: You may risk spreading the infection if you pop the abscess.  Let the Amoxicillin work for a couple of days first.  If it is still present and painful then your healthcare provider can perform an incision and drainage for you.
