my 3 year old has a runny nose its clear  and cough , and fever 102.6 . not sure if its allergies or a cold . what should i do ? allergy medicine?

Accepted Answer

Likely a virus: A mild fever from allergies is possible but 102.6 is higher than i would expect.  Most likely this is a viral illness and will resolve in 24-48 hours.  If your child is complaining of headaches, sore throat or ear pain i would make an appointment with his/her doctor tomorrow.

See the Dr.: There are a number of possibilities, including allergies and viral or bacterial infection.  Please have a Dr. examine your child to determine the cause.  Then you'll know what the appropriate treatment will be.

i have a common cold, but now my 3 year old daughter have a runny nose, congestion and fever that goes up and down, ive been alternating tylenol and motrin but keeps on and off. right now fever is 101.6 how often can i give her these meds?

Some basics: Fever is a normal body response to illness which increases heart &amp; breathing rate to push blood along to supply improve tissue access to oxygen &amp;  healing factors. Low grade fever under 103 has no adverse effect on the body beyond the achy feeling. Fever meds for comfort can be given as needed, but are not required. I use one or the other but not both.

3 year old with blocked and runny nose, difficulty breathing(shortness of breath), restless, loss of appetite and complaining about stomach pains. these symptoms appeared suddenly, 2 days after a family gathering. ?

Accepted Answer

Go to ER: Could be Common cold or Coronavirus. With difficulty breathing, your little one will need to be seen in the ER for treatment. Without difficulty breathing, all symptoms could be treated at home. Acetaminophen for fever/pain relief, decongestant for nasal congestion. Lots of fluids, especially electrolytes, and rest.

Allergies: It's possible he/she may have some environmental allergies, especially if they have itchy eyes, sneezing, and the nasal discharge is generally clear.

Your doctor can perform a basic exam to check for abnormalities, and then refer you to an allergist.

Possible allergies.: If your daughter is having recurrent symptoms with out fevers and signs of acute infection she is most likely having recurrent allergic symptoms.   I would rec using saline nose drops for nasal hygiene. 
Take some loratidine  otc, and look for signs of improvement. 
If nothing changes in 3-4 weeks then talk to your pediatrician.

Cough in a 3 y/o: Call your pediatrician... Your daughter may need to be examined. Children's airways are narrow and can become blocked leading to croup or pneumonia.

If : If your son is worsening instead of improving, you should call his doctor and have him seen.  Viral illnesses can last 7-10 days total, but should start to improve after the first 3 to 4.  If he is worsening, he could be developing a bacterial super-infection such as sinusitis, an ear infection or bronchitis.  Good luck!

Nasal saline: None of the over the counter cough/cold medicines offer more than giving you something to do, They are considered worthless under the age of 6. Any such symptoms are  aggravated by dust/fumes/irritants so nasal saline wash to remove them helps. A concentration on fluid balance &amp; comfort foods also helps.

Cough treatment: Use bulb syringe to get rid of mucus in nose, then use salt water nose drops 4times daily  take her in wash room and turn on hot shower. Let her breath in hot steam  have her sleep with vaporizer. Elevate mattress. Use vapo rub on chest. Push fluids but avoid milk.
