Very!: It works, you must work it. Open mindedness and willingness are everything, if you have a strong desire to quit then aa will work for you. With that said, it is not the only game in town, and others benefit with therapy, medications can assist along with mutual therapy and/or individual therapy. Good luck.

Simple: Pick up your yellow pages and go on-line to find aa. It is free. It is confidential. There are meetings that are open. Meetings that are closed. Meetings in the morning, noon & night. Meetings 7 days a week. Meetings for smokers and meetings for non-smokers.  Step meetings.  There are some meetings that are just for aviators, or just for doctors etc.  This is a place to find help and support.

Positive 12 steps: First you need to attend meetings consistently. Then you pick a sponsor and work with them. Once you are ready can can sponsor(volunteer). It takes time to ripen.  My sponsor(master co) says "growth takes time, effort and lots of dumb mistakes" try to have weekly meeting and be consistent. Learn more at http://positive12steps.Org.

Sort of: Aa believes in a "higher power, " but they are not per se a religious organization nor does one have to be religious to benefit from the program.

Controversial: There are some people who believe that 12-step programs can resemble a "cult" process.  However, most professionals in this field definitely do not believe this, and having met tens of thousands of people in aa and na, I do not believe that this is true either.  People who benefit from meetings go to more meetings, and get more out of it.  Addiction implies it does harm- in most folks it does good.

AA & the 12 Steps: The 12 steps are the program outlined and recommended by alcoholics anonymous.  So aa is the organization, and the 12 steps are the method it offers its members for staying sober.  The 12 steps have been adapted by many other organizations for recovery from a variety of addictive and compulsive substances and behaviors.

Mostly: They are similar in the recognition that one feels powerless over the addiction, that a higher power (understood as god, or the 12-step fellowship, or something else) is needed to help, and in working the "12 steps".  Obviously one can abstain from alcohol or recreational drugs, but not from food, so there are important differences too.

what makes one an alcoholic?

Its causes problems: Alcoholic is actually not a medical term, however people in aa call themselves alcoholics because for some reason or another alcohol causes problems in their life, health, relationships, legal trouble. Maybe they were just done having it  rule their lives, it kept them stuck, from realizing their dreams, maybe they were robbed of their mind, body and spirit. Unfortunately some never see this.
