Tophi
Gout occurs when uric acid builds up in tissue such as skin or joints. A gout attack is a result of an inflammatory response to the uric acid. A tophus is a sign of severe gout. Tophi are collections of uric acid crystals. They can form virtually anywhere in the body. Common spots include the outer ear, elbow bursa, and just outside the finger tip joints.
