Immotile cilia syndrome

Immotile cilia syndrome

Share

Link copied

Immotile cilia syndrome is a medical condition in which individuals have a defect in the protein responsible for movement of tiny hair-like structures on the surface of lung pipes. These hair-like structures are called cilia. Cilia serve to move mucus, which entraps inhaled dust and bacteria, up the lung pipes to be cough up. Individuals with this syndrome are particularly susceptible to lung infections because they have difficulty clearing their lungs. Many individuals also have a heart that is pointed to the right instead of the left.
